Daryl Lee, a graduate in Data Science and Analytics from the National University of Singapore, had developed deep knowledge of traditional machine learning during his schooling, and knew that he felt passionate to pursue a career in the field of technology. He initially set out on a job search for a data scientist role, but as he approached the market as a job hunter, he began to learn more about additional areas of tech - including AI - that stoked his curiosity. He saw the opportunity to apply to the Google Skills Ignition SG Traineeship programme, and decided to choose the Professional Cloud Architect track so he could develop his tech skills from within a brand like Google. He was delighted when he later found out that the on-the-job-training aspect of the traineeship had placed him into the AI and customer engineering team - Daryl says, ‘I was going to be thrown into the AI storm…it was a match made in heaven.’
The traineeship, while challenging, proved to be invaluable in developing his knowledge with in-demand skills. Daryl embraced independent learning, navigating Google's vast resources and collaborating effectively with colleagues. He developed crucial skills such as resourcefulness, independent research and problem-solving. He actively engaged with his peers, learned from their diverse backgrounds, and expanded his understanding of the broader AI ecosystem.
"I was able to expose myself to multiple roles within the same space," Daryl explains. "I learned about different internal stakeholders and what their roles entailed, which gave me a clearer picture of the AI job market and helped me identify my own career goals." Daryl also points out, “the trainees themselves come from all walks of life,” giving examples that some could be software engineers or cloud migration specialists, which was quite different from his own experience in machine learning, and they were able to lean on each other, even if they weren’t working on the same project.
Additionally, he participated in workshops curated by his Program Managers, including resume writing sessions, which significantly improved his job search strategy.
Leveraging these newfound skills and experiences, Daryl successfully secured a role as a Machine Learning Engineer at Searce. He now applies his knowledge of cloud computing and AI/Machine Learning technologies to deliver innovative solutions for clients.
“My new role involves understanding client needs, developing solution architectures, and delivering successful AI/Machine Learning projects. The skills I developed at Google – from independent learning and problem-solving to effective communication and collaboration – are crucial to my success in this role," Daryl says.
Daryl's journey exemplifies the transformative power of lifelong learning, even for those who have graduated recently. By embracing the challenges, developing key skills, and leveraging the unique learning environment, he successfully navigated the complexities of the AI job market and launched a thriving career in the cloud.
For those considering the traineeship, Daryl offers this advice: "Be resourceful, be proactive, and be open-minded. The opportunities within the program are even broader than they initially seem. Embrace the challenges, learn from your experiences, and never stop exploring."
